Note: This blog post serves as an accompaniment to the corresponding podcast episode of A Changed Mind, where we’ll distill down the core ideas of this week’s theme, along with additional distinctions and insights. If you haven’t listened to the episode yet, you can go here to do so. Enjoy.
In this episode, I’m taking you back to my first, and very challenging, interview on Impact Theory with Tom Bilyeu. This was a milestone in my own development because it was one of the toughest interviews I had done.
Much credit to Tom and the Impact Theory team. At the time, I had no established brand—no one really knew who I was. Not that I’m a household name yet! But the producer had come across my work and said to Tom, “Listen, we’ve had all the great thought leaders in personal development, spiritual growth, human evolution, peak performance, and longevity on the show. But every once in a while, you want to be the one to introduce the next big player, the next Kobe Bryant.” And he thought I might be that next person.
Tom invited me on, and I knew it was going to be a challenging interview. Much of how I present reality, address limiting beliefs, and teach tools to transform and rewire our minds doesn’t always fit within traditional logic. Tom is a deep thinker and highly intellectual; he doesn’t believe in a traditional concept of God, so I knew I had my work cut out for me.
As you’ll see in this interview, Tom really holds my feet to the fire. While answering his questions, I found myself expanding on my explanations, and he’d ask more questions to clarify what I meant. About halfway through, I realized I had about 18 open loops. I give myself credit for coming back to close all of them, including Tom’s question, “How would you coach someone like me who doesn’t believe in God?”
You’re going to love this episode. I wanted to share it with you for two main reasons. First, it’s foundational. These 45 minutes are packed with the context around what I call “personal development 2.0.” If you’ve been feeling stuck in personal growth or held back by limiting beliefs, this interview explains a lot about what’s going on and what you can shift to finally release that resistance. Second, I wanted to share a bit of my personal backstory. A lot of people have watched this interview—over a million views on Impact Theory and another million on a republished channel—but most have no idea how nervous I was going head-to-head with Tom Bilyeu.
So, enjoy the interview, whether you’re listening or watching. If you have questions and are following on YouTube, please ask them. I read all the comments and try to answer as many as I can. I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did experiencing it.
Morning David!
I love your energy and your deep insights through in-depth personal exploration. I’m relatively new to your podcast and find them to be fascinating and highly relevant to where I am at in my own personal development journey.
One thing you shared during your interview with Tom really stood out to me—this concept of being in only 1 of 2 states at any given time. We as humans tend to assign emotions to our states and as such, believe we have a myriad of states we could be in, which in turn can make it super difficult to shift our state because we’ve assigned that emotion—we get stuck in a gray zone. But by dichotomizing our states into sympathetic and parasympathetic, primal and non-primal (can’t recall the exact term you used), then we should be able to more clearly recognize which of the 2 states we are in AND have very clear choices in front of us. Which in turn, puts the responsibility of our state on us (and I imagine which many don’t actually want to have—because they can no longer live unconsciously in the world and complain).
Lots of thoughts—and wanted to share that one with you. Keep doing this work! I’m a physician and coach and incorporated your journal tips from the other post into my morning routine as well. I’d love to talk with you further. Feel free to check out my Substack and website for my own blog posts — you will be seeing more of me in the future!
