Note: This blog post serves as an accompaniment to the corresponding podcast episode of A Changed Mind, where we’ll distill down the core ideas of this week’s theme, along with additional distinctions and insights. If you haven’t listened to the episode yet, you can go here to do so. Enjoy.
Today I’m going to share with you a simple framework that will distill down everything you’ve already learned in personal growth, but in a way that simplifies and allows you to actualize the promise of personal development and transformation. My goal is to help you connect all the dots and put together all of the pieces in a way that makes sense – no matter how long you’ve been on this journey, how many challenges you’ve already overcome or still stand in your way, or how aware you are of your limiting beliefs.
Getting To The Root Cause Of Change
Now, if you’re reading this and you’re in my world, it’s because there’s something you want to create or change that doesn’t exist in your reality right now. You have a goal. Or there’s something “absent” from your life that you’d like to fill in. There are things you want, there are things you don’t want, and there’s a gap between them. I call this the “contrast”.
The problem is that most people try to close this gap through various effects, not the root cause. We work with a lot of entrepreneurs and high performers, and a lot of them think that if they can just find the magic pill strategy, they can grow their business. So they go from course to course to course or coaching program to coaching program to coaching program, and they work on creating online funnels, webinars, content, SEO, and a bunch of other tactics and strategies – aka effects.
What they don’t understand is that whether you select the right strategic approach or whether you get the strategy that you’re implementing to perform in alignment with the results that you’re looking for, comes down to invisible forces. That’s why so often people get stuck because they’re paying attention to what they can see.
But the root cause of what strategy you select or of whether you get that strategy to actually work, whether it’s strategies in your business, strategies in your relationships, strategies in your spiritual growth, strategies in your health and wellness, is your thoughts, your emotions, and your belief systems.
The Formula For Creating ANY Change
So the name of the game is to transform your belief system, because only then you can transform the way you think, the way that you feel, the actions that you take, and therefore the results that you produce. These are the invisible forces driving strategic selection and strategic implementation that we’ve become so convinced are the bridge between our desires and our desired results. But I’m here to tell you that the strategy is not the bridge. The real strategy is what you’re thinking, believing, and feeling on a moment-by-moment basis.
The equation that we teach people who want to control the levers responsible for root cause changes in their lives is DESIRE + NON-RESISTANCE = DESIRED RESULT. Most of us know what we want (desire) – more money, a better relationship, a more successful business, better health. At the very least, we know what we don’t want – anxiety, stress, unpredictability, overwhelm.
It’s the resistance that’s invisible – the thoughts, emotions, and belief systems that are deeply rooted in our psychology. It’s the things we can’t see but determine so much of how we experience reality that must be overcome to get the results we want – in any area of our lives.
The good news is that our awareness of the ‘desire’ part of the equation gives us a leg up on achieving our desired outcomes, specifically when it’s a result of going through an undesirable experience. Maybe you don’t like the pain associated with a certain health condition or the frustration that comes from trying to grow your business. The moment we become aware of this contrasted experience, we immediately create what Abraham Hicks calls a “rocket of desire”. In other words, when we experience something we don’t like or want, simultaneously (and within another dimension of the quantum field), we’re planting the seed for the opposite of that thing to materialize. Stick with me if this is all sounding too “woo woo”.
The Present Moment Is Old News
What’s happening is that you’re putting off a vibration, which is basically an asking for the Universe, or Life, or Spirit, or God to help us create whatever it is we desire. Neville Goddard would say that everything we’re experiencing in our 3rd-dimensional reality began in the fourth dimension – or quantum field – of our imagination. And if we’re putting enough consistent attention towards that idea or feeling the emotions of that idea through the power of manifestation or materialization, we will make that idea a reality. The idea itself comes alive…when we give it the focus it needs to do so.
Naysayers might say “Yeah but my life never changes.” That may be true, but only because we tend to only focus on our current reality and circumstances, not on the attainment of fulfillment of our desires. In other words, we become addicted to the way our lives are in the here and now and give up imagining or giving our attention to the vibrational attention that exists – even if we can’t see it.
But it comes into existence when we experience the problem or the thing that we no longer desire in the first place. This creates that psycho-cybernetic “Groundhog Day” loop where we self-perpetuate the experience of reality we want to transform. As Abraham Hicks would say, “You’ve got to realize that the present moment is old news”.
Do Less…To Change Faster?
Grasping this idea takes a certain level of trust and patience because at this point, we’re not actually doing anything – at least not consciously. You simply have an experience you don’t want, and the intelligence of life immediately activates the opposite of it, which is what you do want. Interestingly, the degree of discomfort tends to equate to the degree of what gets created in the quantum field that’s waiting to materialize in the near future.
It’s why people who grow up broke often become millionaires and why people with terrible health conditions become extremely healthy. Why? Because those contrasted experiences are life’s really interesting way of invoking from inside of you the desire and the vibration for the opposite of it.
The Internal & External Mechanisms Of Change
Now that we’re clear on this notion that we’ve got desires (or non-desires) that activate themselves as ideas and energy “out there” in the Universe, step two is materializing or actualizing that desire into existence by dropping the resistance we have to it. This is done at a non-physical level.
What that means is that you’re going to have thoughts, ideas, synchronicities, and coincidences that also become activated at the same time. They happen the moment you experience a problem or challenge or undesirable experience. 99% of the heavy lifting is already done. All the pieces begin to move in a collective organization, even if you can’t see it happening.
This is when most people would begin to ask, “Okay, so what do I have to go do now”. They’d go into hustle mode. They’d go seek out the perfect strategy. They’d seek external solutions to what is undeniably an internal situation. But that’s not how the metaphysics of all this works.
The important thing is for you to know that the thing you desire is on its way. That doesn’t mean that you do nothing at all. It means recognizing that the ideas needed to create the desired outcome you want have already been activated in consciousness and now it’s your job to take action on those ideas, hunches, inspirations, opportunities, and connections as they are presented to you. The difference is that it’s not hard work. There’s no pushing, pulling, or grinding. Just allowance and patience as the Universe unfolds the plan before you.
How Thoughts Really Become Things
The first way that a thought becomes a thing is what I would call the internal mechanism. It happens because you’ve had this contrasting experience – you don’t want to be broke anymore, you want to have financial abundance. Now, if you can be in non-resistance, meaning holding onto the belief that money is easy to make, you will start to have thoughts about making money easily.
By contrast, if you believe making money is going to require a lot of sacrifice and effort, you’re not going to access thoughts and ideas that lend to you becoming financially abundant. There’s an inner conflict there – an incongruence, resistance. But with the empowering belief that money is easy to make, the Reticular Activating System of your brain will start to produce thoughts and emotions aligned with making more money and will seek out opportunities, people, and resources to support that belief.
The mistake people make is they take score too quickly. They think, “I’ve been believing this thing for 30 days and I’m still not rich. So therefore money must be hard to make.” But you have to give it enough time. It’s not a lot of time, but just notice when you’ve decided to make some new decision or empower belief around something and your situation hasn’t changed immediately. Your current reality will take some time to catch up with the new belief. Neville Goddard would say we have to “stay loyal” to our new beliefs and, if you’re willing to do that, it’s inevitable that your thoughts, emotions, and actions will all contribute to the actualization of your desire.
Simultaneously, there’s an external factor that’s taking place. The moment you recognize a desire, other people’s unconscious minds become activated and driven to do things that create coincidences, synchronicities, and timing in your life to also contribute to this new realization of financial abundance – in this example. This is where all of a sudden a company puts out a job posting and it’s perfect for you. They might have thousands of candidates, but somehow someone got your application, connected with you, and – even if you weren’t the most qualified candidate – you landed the job. Now you’re making more money than you’ve ever made before.
If you look at anything that you’ve ever created, you have to take some action to bring it to life. It’s easy to look back on those times and reminisce on the amount of time, energy, and effort you put into the process. But if you look at all the things external to you that needed to happen for that result to be produced, it’s far greater than the action that you took.
3 Steps To A Changed Mind (and A Transformed Life)
To recap, we all have experiences in our lives that we don’t like that invoke a desire within us – it happens automatically and there’s nothing we consciously have to do. At the same time, we’re activating all of the cooperative components, ideas, vibrations, people, and resources through Infinite Intelligence, which is most of the work required to materialize that desire into reality. At this point, all that’s left for us to do is tackle the internal resistance by staying in alignment with the thoughts, beliefs, and emotions that support our desired outcome. That’s it. That’s the game. And it really is that simple.
